Project 2- The Corvette Car Hauler

On of the first problems with hauling a corvette on a car hauler trailer is that the trailer fenders stick up so much higher than the bottom of the door of the car once it’s loaded on.  This makes getting out of the car difficult if you drive the car onto the trailer since you can’t open up the door.

I had an old utility trailer, which has the railing 12″ above the bed and at the same level as the top of the fenders. This old trailer had a wooden bed and it was rotted.

I started by stripping all of the wood off and wire brushing (mostly wire wheel on grinder) and cleaning all of the rust off.

To solve the problem of getting out of the car I made a raised bed on both sides of the trailer 18″ wide. This is ssimg_9680- car hauler in progresswider than I would have used if I had put more thought into it. 14″ would have been fine. In fact I made the ramps 14″ wide, and they fit into slots that place them at the outside edge if the raised area of the trailer. I covered the trailer with 14Ga. diamond plate steel.

This does however create another problem. I need to keep the slope of the ramps around 7° so the front end doesn’t scrape as the car is starting up the ramp. The the top angle as the car goes over it to the level must be around or below 5° so the car doesn’t high center on that hump.

But my text is getting ahead of my photos. I painted top and bottom with Rustoleum “Hammerd Coat”.   Then on to build the ramps.car hauler finished and painted ssimg_9690

I’m pretty happy with my Corvette Car Hauler. I still have to re wire it. I have however found the greatest way to mount the tail lights so I won’t crunch them,

Most trailer have little wings with the lights in a vulnerable position. These are tucked into the underside of the raised ramps.
